Satie's 'Gnossiennes' were composed in the late 19th Century. He coined the word to indicate a new 'type' of composition. The musical vocabulary is a continuation of that of the 'Gymnopedies.' 'Gnossienne No. 1' is the most well-known of these compositions, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes. It has been used in many TV shows and films, most recently in 'Man On Wire.' This is a solo guitar arrangement.

Collectively, the 'Gymnopedies' are seen as the precursors to modern ambient music - gentle, yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. Gymnopedie No. 1 is perhaps the most well-known of the three, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes.
