Satie's 'Gymnopedies,' published in 1888 were three piano compositions, each written in 3/4 time and sharing a common theme and structure. Collectively, the 'Gymnopedies' are seen as the precursors to modern ambient music - gentle, yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. Gymnopedie No. 1 is perhaps the most well-known of the three, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes. 'The Girl with the Flaxen Hair' ('La fille aux cheveux de lin') is the eighth prelude from Debussy's 'Preludes, Book I.' The piece begins with a delicate arpeggio motif, from which much of the following music is derived. This is the famous Adagio cantabile movement of Beethoven's Sonata No. 8, written in 1798. It exemplifies the expressive Adagio style of many slow movements in the classical period. The famous cantabile melody is played three times, always in A-flat major, separated by two modulating episodes; the movement is thus a simple rondo rather than the sonata form more common for movements of this seriousness. 'Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor' by Beethoven, popularly known as 'Moonlight Sonata,' was completed in 1801. It is rumoured to be dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom Beethoven was, or had been, in love. It is one of Beethoven's most popular sonatas. This is the first and most famous movement, and the sense of yearning and tranquility works very well as a romantic soundtrack. It has appeared in many films and TV shows, including: Glee, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Closer, Ray, Elephant, K-19: The Widowmaker and The Man Who Wasn't There. 'Prelude No. 1 in C major' is the first prelude of J.S. Bach's 'The Well-Tempered Clavier.'
