This is the famous Adagio cantabile movement of Beethoven's Sonata No. 8, written in 1798. It exemplifies the expressive Adagio style of many slow movements in the classical period. The famous cantabile melody is played three times, always in A-flat major, separated by two modulating episodes; the movement is thus a simple rondo rather than the sonata form more common for movements of this seriousness. The composition has been used many times in film and television, including 'The Man Who Wasn't There'.

'The Girl with the Flaxen Hair' ('La fille aux cheveux de lin') is the eighth prelude from Debussy's 'Preludes, Book I.' The piece begins with a delicate arpeggio motif, from which much of the following music is derived. The piece builds in tension and volume towards a climax in the middle of the piece, before winding down for a tender, relaxing ending. The melancholic, dreamy nature of the piece lends itself very well to romantic and reflective scenes, and it has appeared in several TV and film soundtracks for this purpose. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

Satie's 'Gymnopedies,' published in 1888 were three piano compositions, each written in 3/4 time and sharing a common theme and structure. Collectively, the 'Gymnopedies' are seen as the precursors to modern ambient music - gentle, yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. Gymnopedie No. 1 is perhaps the most well-known of the three, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes. It has been used in many TV shows and films, including: Man On Wire, The Royal Tenenbaums, What Lies Beneath and The X Files. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

'Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor' by Beethoven, popularly known as 'Moonlight Sonata,' was completed in 1801. It is rumoured to be dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom Beethoven was, or had been, in love. It is one of Beethoven's most popular sonatas. This is the first and most famous movement, and the sense of yearning and tranquility works very well as a romantic soundtrack. It has appeared in many films and TV shows, including: Glee, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Closer, Ray, Elephant, K-19: The Widowmaker and The Man Who Wasn't There. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

'Prelude No. 15 in D-flat major,', commonly known as the 'Raindrop Prelude' is the longest and most well-known of Chopin's Op. 28 preludes. The famous, delicate opening melody appears three times in the piece, and the middle section features some surprisingly loud and dramatic sections. The dramatic, romantic, delicate and emotional nature of the music lends itself very well to period dramas and romantic soundtracks. It has been used in the soundtrack for numerous films and TV shows, including 'Face/Off' and 'Moonraker.' This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

'Prelude No. 1 in C major' is the first prelude of J.S. Bach's 'The Well-Tempered Clavier.' This collection of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, dated 1722, is generally regarded as one of the most influential works in the history of Western classical music. The music consists almost entirely of rising broken chords, which gives the piece a calming, romantic and majestic quality. This lends itself very well to period drama soundtracks, and any scene where ideas of dignity and beauty need to be complemented by music. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

'Clair de Lune' is the third (and most famous) movement from Debussy's 'Suite bergamasque.' It begins with a slow, delicate passage that gradually builds towards a loud climax. The middle section famously consists of a dreamy melody, accompanied by soft, rolling arpeggio patterns. Eventually, the opening theme returns with slight variations, leading into a soft, subtle ending. The melancholic, dreamy nature of the piece lends itself very well to romantic and reflective scenes, and it has appeared in numerous soundtracks, including: Twilight, The Darjeeling Limited, Atonement, Ocean's Thirteen, Man On Fire, Ocean's Eleven, Seven Years In Tibet and The Game. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

Satie's 'Gnossiennes' were composed in the late 19th Century. He coined the word to indicate a new 'type' of composition. The musical vocabulary is a continuation of that of the 'Gymnopedies.' 'Gnossienne No. 1' is the most well-known of these compositions, and the dreamy, ambient nature of the music lends itself very well to romantic and contemplative scenes. It has been used in many TV shows and films, most recently in 'Man On Wire.' This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

'Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor,' commonly known as 'Fur Elise,' is one of Beethoven's most popular compositions, although it was not published until 40 years after his death. The piece is in rondo form, with the famous opening melody reappearing several times throughout the piece. Almost everyone who plays the piano will have learned the first section early on, although the middle of the piece features some more virtuosic passages. 'Fur Elise' works well in period dramas and romantic scenes. This performance uses a perfectly sampled Yamaha C3 Neo grand piano, with subtle hall reverb for ambience.

Collectively, the 'Gymnopedies' are seen as the precursors to modern ambient music - gentle, yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition.
